METAPHORICAL TUNE PORTRAYING LOVE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PRAYING MANTIS.
Don Dixon is considered to be a major influence in the groovy jangle pop scene. He was born on December 13, 1950 in Lancaster, South Carolina. His music hit the charts in the early 1980's, which includes time when his famous song: Praying Mantis was produced. Don Dixon is an interesting man, and was also a record producer and bass guitarist, and is still alive to the day.
As a successful musician, Don Dixon was not just another one hit wonder. He wrote fantastic pieces of rock & roll beyond "Praying Mantis," including Romantic Depressive from 1995, The Invisible Man from 2001 with it's followup Note Pad #38 and The entire Combustible World in One Small Room from 2006. His later is considered one of his darker songs, and an interesting experience to listen to for any of those interested in the continuous progression of his career.

Praying Mantis, is one of my favorite and most interesting songs produced by Don Dixon. While the inspiration and root of this song was not released by Don Dixon, I like to think that this song was inspired from his view of women. This song describes a young man who is hunting for a new partner and trying to recover from his last. He goes out into the town and discovers a new girl, who is beautiful beyond all rationale, but also reminds him of his ex-girlfreind. Because his memories haunt him, he suspects that this new girl will just take his heart, chew it up and spit it out. To portray this he uses the metaphor of a praying mantis. See, when praying mantises mate, the female cleaves off the males head off after sex, this destroying the male. After the young man in the song is within the woman's grasp, he is transformed for the worse, and will simply never be the man that he once was. The song is quite upbeat, bit after a complete analysis of the lyrics, I now have reason to believe that Don Dixon actually has a dark side. He feels that he cannot truly trust a woman because they seek to control and change him.
